You can't possibly imagine a more generic curry house exterior: it belies what turns out to be a wonderful curry experience. If you are brave enough to go in after seeing the shoddy outside you will be rewarded with really well executed indian favourites. I have to say I had a dish billed as hot and it was a bit mild for me (no I'm not pretending to be hard). Nevertheless it was very tasty and everything was unfailingly fresh. If this food was in central Oxford you would double the price. Recommended.
Poor food, even poorer service!

Having attended this restaurant on several occasions over many years, we were very disappointed with how much the restaurant has deteriorated lately. The food was poor - meat chewy, yorkshire puddings cold, roast potatoes soggy. Despite stating that vegetarians were welcome (there are a couple in the family), this was not the case, and the manager was extremely rude to the vegetarians in the party. If you're going to impersonate Gordon Ramsey, you should make sure the food reflects the attitude! Would definitely not recommend The Windmill!
A real treasure

As The Oxford Arms is fairly near work I've been going here relatively often for a few years now. The place is superb and extremely reliable. The atmosphere in this (probably 19th century?) pub is extremely pleasant, with not a hint of any fakery or undue modernisation. The beers on tap are always excellent, especially as they have my personal favourite, a pint of Hooky.
The specials board is updated regularly and always have something of interest, especially if you like fish (not me). During the week I find it hard to resist their venison burger (or bambi burger as I like to call it), but there are plenty of other hearty items to tempt you. The Sunday lunch is also excellent, with the roast beef being admirably bloody unless you ask for it different.
Go there, you won't regret it.

I have eaten at this restaurant more than 10 times now, in the last 1 year. It is always very reliable. Food is always good and sometimes very good, service is always very good. Its' 'Dine with Wine' is probably the best deal in town, particularly at lunch time. The back room can be very noisy in the evenings when the restaurant is full, but never in the front room or at lunchtime. Their menues catered for specific food allergies is notable, too. Overall, it must deserve the reputation as the best restaurant in Oxford.

I have eaten twice, both occasion at lunchtime. First time, I ordered a fish pie, which I could hardly taste any fish in it. Very disappointed, but I told myself that may be I hit their off day. The second time, I ordered a fish and chips. Exactly the same! It had hardly any fish taste again! Chips were over-browned yet soggy, batter was far too much and far too dry. I was again disappointed, and also puzzled by the fact how this place can be under the same management as the Blanc, which constantly produces very very good food..

We were recommended this restaurant by friends who live in Oxford.
Fantastic food, friendly staff, great atmosphere. Apparently they change their menu every month ... we will definately return for a meal the next time we are in Oxford.
What a concept: amazing food at affordable prices. It might catch on ... but probably not. If you go to one restaurant in the next month, make it this one.
Great Food - just make sure you keep the menu...

Ate out 17th March 2007 and had a nice dover sole to share for two. The meal was as expected very good, last time I eat there was in 1996 so we went back to remind our selves of the past. Only thing I'll say is - keep the menu you order from -. We expected a bill for 23 pounds for the fish only to find another menu placed on the table behind us when the bill was presented but this one stated it was per person!

found the staff very warming, very polite and very cheerful, atmosphere great, excellent meal which was all piping hot and fresh. great atmosphere, non smoking restaurant. the location is excellent and although the building is old it has character and an awful lot of history behind it. i would recommend any body to go to the restaurant if they want value for money. its extremely busy when i always take my family there which shows that it is certainly a place to go for a extremely excellent meal.well done staff!!!! keep up the good work.
Don't believe the hype..

Having been a regular at the Living Room since it opened I have heard many different opinions about it. There is no other Oxford venue that can boast of having such a well appointed bar and restaurant with fantastic live music almost every day of the week and a restaurant which serves good honest food at reasonable prices (yes, they may seem a bit expensive when you consider the fact a large part of the menu is traditional "home comfort" style food but if you bear in mind the quality of decor and food is vastly superior to other restaurants offering a similar menu it suddenly makes sense).
The style of service is unique in Oxford (both in the bar and restaurant) and may well be the factor that splits opinion within the town. Personnally I love the way the staff there take a personalised approach to service and no whim is ever too much trouble. The cocktails are fantastic and the bar staff can be really good fun (when you can actually get to the bar, weekends are very busy!).
My advice would be to approach this venue with an open mind, leave any preconceptions you may have to one side and you may find yourself being seduced by what is simply Oxford's classiest bar and restaurant.

Having visited post Christmas (2006), we expected a memorable visit after reading some reviews. Well, it was......but not for the right reasons. The food was prepared, cooked and presented very poorly. The staff were cold and unhelpful. The overall meal represented very poor value for money. The location is good, however, the upkeep pf the building is poor with leaky roofs and unhygenic toilets. Avoid until this restaurant has been refurbished and has new team in place!
If you haven't already, why not register and then you too can contribute your own reviews.
